individual residencies

Individual Residencies average 10 days. When the art center is not being used for group sessions or events, we offer blocks of time to be used for Individual Residencies. As Group Residencies are the main focus of our center, we only have limited availability for Individual Sessions. We prefer that people stay for 10 days at a time but we will allow longer sessions to people who provide a clear proposal for how they will use their time here. If you are interested in coming for less than 10 days, we make exceptions for single parents, and other people whose time is limited by circumstance.

Artists who participate in an Individual Residency live on the property and are given a private studio. Residents have use of the main kitchen, communal supplies, the laundry facilities, the library, and other communal spaces on the property. We provide some groceries, pantry staples, and condiments but residents are responsible for their own meals. We do at least one group dinner a week where we provide the meal. It is not a requirement to have a car while attending any of our residency sessions but we may be less available to help out with town runs during the Individual Sessions.

Individual Residencies retain many of the aspects of a Group Residency, especially if there are a few artists on the property at the same time. The main difference between attending an Individual Residency versus a Group Residency is that other residents will be coming and going during your stay. Sometimes a session with a few people can have a communal vibe where everyone likes getting together, sharing meals, and doing studio visits etc. While other times you may be on your own, or sharing the property with others who prefer to keep more to themselves. During your stay you have full use of the facilities, and we are always available to you for anything you need but we will also be focused on residency center work and our own projects.

Some of the things that may be going on during your stay include but are not limited to the following- artists leaving and arriving, day use of empty studios by local artists, facilities work including small construction projects, pop-up art shows, community art nights, workshops, lectures, and family or friends of the art center may visit. All in all, you will have plenty of quiet and uninterrupted space and time to work amongst the backdrop of the daily life of the art center. You are welcome to participate in any of the public facing events that happen while you stay.

Dates on offer will be posted when we put out our annual calls. If you are flexible with your dates, it will give you more of a chance of getting a spot. You will be able to choose 10 days that work for you within a given period of time. If you request a longer period of time, you may be accepted for the entire time you requested, or if there is no space to accommodate the extra time, you may be accepted for a 10 day period within that time frame.

When our application period opens all dates and details will be posted on the submissions page.
