land acknowledgement
This area is a part of the extensive ancestral homeland of the nations that made up the Wabenaki Confederacy, which once populated all of what is now Northern New England, and most of Eastern Canada. Despite continued attacks, incursion, and a devastating pandemic brought on by the white settlers, the nations of this area maintained sovereignty over their lands until the mid 1700’s when the English settlers officially claimed the lands and moved up en masse.
Today the nations of the Wabenaki, (Ckuwaponahkiyik, People of the Dawn) still have a strong presence in this region. In June of 2020 the Mi’kmaq Nation, the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Passamaquoddy Tribe and the Penobscot Nation formed the Wabenaki Alliance as part of their continued effort to have their inherent tribal sovereignty recognized by the State of Maine.
We acknowledge that the brutal conquest of the native populations in this area created the means for us to currently occupy this space. We hope that by creating a place of peace and creativity, open to all, that we honor the spirt of this land.
