Residencies

For 2025 we will only be offering self-guided residencies. We are starting out slowly to make sure that we can offer the best experience to everyone who works with us. Up to 3 artists may be on the property during the same session but you will not officially be part of a cohort. Group Residencies will be available in the future and other opportunities are listed in the site specific installations page.

Self-Guided Residency

site specific installations

facilities

There are a variety of buildings on the property, including the main house with a front and back porch, a huge 2 story timber frame barn, a small shed/workspace, a stage in the field, 3 four season yurts, an off-grid cabin, and a cathedral like outbuilding. There are also remnants of outdoor classrooms scattered throughout the woods, which include seating areas, fire pits and primitive shelters. There are numerous paths that wind through the woods, and the beautiful Sheepscot River at the bottom of the hill.

Each resident will be assigned their own room and a dedicated work space. There are also plenty of communal spaces that you can claim for the day or longer as an alternate to your dedicated workspace. There are live/work spaces, private work spaces, and a large shared studio. Once you are accepted, each resident will have the chance to pick the type of studio and living space that works best for them. WiFi is accessible throughout most of the homestead area.

The main house is the original homestead house built in 1760. It contains the communal areas including the kitchen, dining room and living room, a growing library, and a digital workspace. It also contains some of the bedrooms, a studio space, and is the main area during exhibitions and public events. Laundry facilities and a clothesline are available for residents to use.

Studios

Our studios are housed in a variety of buildings on the property. We match each resident to a studio based on their preferences and their individual needs as an artist. Studio spaces change depending on each resident’s requirements and the amount of people in attendance. You will always have privacy and a quiet space to work. Please note

Please Note: Our studio spaces are unconventional and artists will make use of each space as they see fit.

The yurts can be used as individual studios or as live/work spaces. There is a large 2 story barn with communal studio space on the second floor, and a shop with a concrete floor on the first floor. The first floor can also be used as dedicated work space, work space for oversize projects, and for use by performers. The cabin and the shed both have desks for writing and drawing. There is also a private workspace in one of the rooms of the main house.

For dancers or other performers we have a large barn with a concrete floor, a large flat mowed yard, and a small stage in the field plus various large indoor spaces with wooden floors.

Each studio comes with work tables and lighting, privacy screens that can double as walls to hang work, and shelves to store supplies. We also have easels available for use and communal resources like a small textiles studio, carpentry and carving tools, communal art supplies, and a small tabletop printing press.

meals

We provide all meals while you are at the group residency. If you are part of a self-guided residency, you are free to join us for dinner and other foods will be available to you throughout the day but you will be responsible for more of your own meals. The meals are primarily vegetarian and we try to source local ingredients as much as possible. Maine has a short but vibrant growing season and we are lucky to be surrounded by many small local organic farms that provide fresh produce throughout the season.

We mostly serve vegetarian meals and always have a vegetarian option available. Because we use a lot of fresh vegetables and grains, our meals tend to be vegan, but cheese, dairy and local eggs are all a part of our diet. We are happy to make substitutions for people with food allergies or special diets.

Although all residents are free to take food from the communal fridge and eat the meals we provide, you are also welcome to buy and cook your own food. We have a separate fridge for residents use, and you are welcome to use the communal kitchen when it is not being used to cook the main meals.
