Despite continued attacks, incursion, and a devastating pandemic brought on by the white settlers, the nations of this area maintained sovereignty over their lands until the mid 1700’s when the English settlers officially claimed the lands and moved up en masse.

Today the nations of the Wabanaki, (Ckuwaponahkiyik, People of the Dawn) still have a strong presence in this region. In June of 2020 the Mi’kmaq Nation, the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Passamaquoddy Tribe and the Penobscot Nation formed the Wabanaki Alliance as part of their continued effort to have their inherent tribal sovereignty recognized by the State of Maine.

We acknowledge that the brutal conquest of the native populations in this area created the means for us to currently occupy this space.
